About the Founder & CEO

Dr Phumuza Langa

Dr Phumuza Langa is the Founder and CEO of InnovationCommercialisation (Pty) Ltd. He holds a PhD in Operations Management from the University of Johannesburg (UJ), with research focusing on dynamic capabilities developed by innovative enterprises through technology business incubation services.

His experience in the commercialisation of technological innovation spans over 15 years, having served in several key strategic roles including:

  • Senior Manager: Commercial Analyst (University of Johannesburg, Technology Transfer Office)
  • Research and Development (R&D) Outcomes Manager at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), responsible for intellectual property (IP) commercialisation within the Materials Science Manufacturing unit
  • Commercialisation Manager at the University of Pretoria Technology Transfer Office
  • Deputy Director responsible for technology transfer liaison at the National Intellectual Property Management Office (NIPMO)

Some of the key project highlights include:

  • Successfully setting up the first University Innovation Pod (UNIPOD) in South Africa at UJ, a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) supported facility that helps entrepreneurs prototype their innovations
  • Instrumental in setting up the UJ Technology Transfer Office (TTO) incubation programme for innovative entrepreneurial students
  • Developed a TTO framework at NIPMO that served as a non-prescriptive guide for technology transfer professionals in publicly financed R&D institutions

Overall, he is a well-rounded professional involved in the strategic management of technological innovation, with a particular focus on IP commercialisation, business incubation, spin-out companies, and technology transfer.
